How to know if someone edited a Telegram message
Telegram shows an “edited” mark next to a message but does not show the earlier text. To see what changed you need a bot that remembered the original: Flashback shows the old and the new text side by side and highlights the changed words. It works from the moment you connect; edits made earlier cannot be viewed.
Open in TelegramTelegram opens. No Premium needed, and the bot will see only the private chats you choose.
What you will see
A card with the earlier and the new text, with the changed words highlighted. Every version of the message stays in the archive.
What Telegram itself shows
Telegram changes the message in place: the blog that introduced editing says an edited message gets a small “edited” label so it is easy to tell which were altered. The earlier version is not shown in the conversation. So without a bot all you have is the label: what was written before cannot be found out from the chat.
Does Telegram send a notification about an edit
We found no promise in Telegram’s documentation of a separate notification that the other person edited a message; inside the chat you see the “edited” label. That is what the Flashback bot is for: when a connected chat receives an edit, it sends a card with the earlier and the new text, so you do not need to look through the conversation to notice the change.
Who edited the message
Only the author can edit a message, so, unlike with deletions, it is always clear who changed it. Telegram sends the bot only the new version, so Flashback saves a message the moment it arrives: that way it has the original when an edit comes in. This is also why edits made before you connected cannot be viewed.
What is not tracked
Edits in groups, channels and secret chats, and edits made before the bot was connected. If a message was sent before you connected and corrected after, the bot has only the new version: it does not have the earlier text.
Edit history in the Mini App
The Mini App holds every saved version of an edited message: newest on top, changed words highlighted. You can see how the text changed, even if it was edited several times.
How long versions are kept
The archive is kept for a limited time, 7, 30 or 60 days, and then deleted. You can erase it sooner with the /delete_my_data command.
More questions
- Will the bot show an edit made an hour ago?
- Only if the bot was already connected to that chat at the time.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No. The bot works inside Telegram; no separate app is needed.
- Can I see the earlier text of a message without a bot?
- No. Telegram shows only the “edited” label and the current text. The earlier text is known only to someone who saw the message before the edit, for example a bot connected to the chat in advance.
- Will I see it if the other person edited and then deleted a message?
- Yes, if the bot was connected: every version stays in the archive, and a deletion for both sides brings a card with the saved text.
