How to know if someone deleted a chat with you in Telegram

Telegram does not notify bots when the other person deletes a whole chat for both, so Flashback checks this itself. About 5 to 10 minutes later the bot sends a “🧹 Chat deleted” card with the saved messages, and the Mini App shows the chat as deleted. It works for the chats you connected, and only for messages saved since you connected.

Open in Telegram

Telegram opens. No Premium needed, and the bot will see only the private chats you choose.

What you get

A “🧹 Chat deleted” card with a list of the saved messages and media. In the Mini App the chat is marked as deleted, and the conversation stays in the archive until its retention period ends. This way the conversation stays with you even when it is gone from Telegram itself.

How the bot notices

Every few minutes the bot checks one of your recent messages in the chat. The check changes nothing in the conversation, and the other person cannot see it. If the message is gone, the bot repeats the check a few minutes later and counts the chat as deleted only after the second confirmation. That is the 5 to 10 minute delay.

What it needs

The “Reply to Messages” right and an ordinary text message from you in that chat sent no more than 47 hours ago: Telegram allows this check for 48 hours. If you have not written in the chat for a long time, the bot cannot check it until you write again.

Deleted on their side, for both, or cleared

The other person can delete a chat only for themselves or for both. If only for themselves, your chat stays and the bot sends nothing. If for both, the chat disappears for you too, and then the card arrives. Telegram describes deleting for both as final and without a trace, so in the app itself all you see is that the chat is gone. What is left for you and what you can do is described on the page about deleted chats.

What the bot cannot do

It cannot bring back anything deleted before you connected: it does not have those messages. If you clear the history only on your side, the bot will also decide the chat is deleted: it cannot tell that apart from the other person deleting it.

If there was no bot

Then there is no card: the messages are not with the bot and not in Telegram. What remains is whatever the other person has, an earlier export of yours, and screenshots. What to check and what you can do is described on the page about deleted chats.

More questions

Does the other person know the bot checks the chat?
No. The check changes nothing in the conversation, and the other person cannot see it.
Why did the card not arrive right away?
Telegram tells the bot nothing about a whole chat being deleted, so the bot checks chats itself, about every five minutes, and confirms the deletion with a second check. It usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
What if I have not written in this chat for a long time?
Then there is nothing to check with: it needs a text message from you no older than 47 hours. One new message from you brings the check back for that chat.
Will a card arrive if the other person deleted the chat only on their side?
No. Your chat is still there, and the bot sends nothing.
How can I tell the chat was deleted, not just hidden?
If the chat vanished from the list, check the archive and your folders: it may only be hidden. If it is nowhere, it was deleted for both sides. In that case the bot sends a card if it was connected beforehand.
