Telegram clients that keep deleted messages: the risks
Modified Telegram clients promise to show messages the other person deleted. That is only possible for messages the client received before the deletion, and the price is access to your whole account. There is a safe replacement that does not log in to your account: a bot connected through Chat Automation. It sees only the private chats you choose and never gets your login code or password, but it too works only from the moment you connect it.

What these clients promise
An unofficial client is an app that talks to Telegram through its open API instead of the official app. Telegram allows this: its FAQ says developers are welcome to use the protocol and API. A modified client is usually the official app with changed behaviour. Most of them promise to “not erase” messages the other person deleted.
How it works in practice
Telegram tells every client which messages were deleted (this is described in Telegram’s developer documentation). The official app removes them from the chat. A modified one can ignore that update and leave the message on your screen. That gives the main limit: a client keeps only what it received before the deletion, that is, after you installed it. Anything deleted before that is out of reach, for it as for any bot.
What you hand over to the client
To log in, the client needs the code from Telegram and, if two-step verification is on, your password. After that it holds your session: access to all your chats, groups and contacts, not only the conversations where you want deleted messages. Telegram’s FAQ says a login code should never be shared with anyone. The API terms require developers to guard users’ privacy, but you cannot check what a build from an unofficial source actually does. That does not mean every such client is harmful. The risk, however, stays entirely with you.
What can happen to the account
In its developer documentation Telegram says all accounts that log in through unofficial clients are automatically put under observation, and that flooding or spamming gets an account banned forever. The API terms forbid interfering with Telegram’s basic functionality, and Telegram can cut an app’s access to the API, after which it simply stops working. We do not claim that an account is banned for using such a client. But “under observation” is Telegram’s own wording.
If you already logged in to such an app
Open the Telegram settings, the Devices section (or Privacy and Security, then Active Sessions), and end the sessions you do not recognise or no longer need. Turn on two-step verification, so a login needs both a code and a password, as Telegram’s FAQ advises. Do not give your password or the codes Telegram sends you to anyone else.
The safe replacement: official Chat Automation
Telegram itself lets you connect a bot to your account and pick the private chats it sees. This is how Flashback connects: it gets messages only from the chats you chose, sends a card when the other person deletes a message for both, shows an edit with the old and new text, and keeps an encrypted archive for 7, 30 or 60 days. You can disconnect the bot at any time. The honest difference is not that a bot is safer in every way: it stores the chosen chats on a server, so read the privacy policy. The difference is that access is limited to the chats you chose, not your whole account.
What neither a client nor a bot can do
Messages deleted before you installed the client or connected the bot cannot be brought back by either. The bot gets no groups, channels or calls, and no secret chats. Any app that promises to bring back an already deleted conversation promises the impossible.
More questions
- Will a modified client bring back messages deleted yesterday?
- No. It keeps only what it received before the deletion, that is, after installation. Messages deleted earlier cannot be brought back by it or by a bot.
- Do I need a modded app to see deleted messages?
- No. A modified client only exists to keep deleted messages on your screen. A bot connected through Chat Automation gives a similar benefit without logging in to your account, and it too starts from the moment you connect.
- Will Telegram ban my account for using an unofficial client?
- Telegram says accounts that log in through unofficial clients are put under observation, and it promises bans for flooding and spamming. How it treats your case we do not know and do not promise.
- What if I already entered my login code in a third-party app?
- End the extra sessions in the settings, in the Devices section, and turn on two-step verification. Do not give the code Telegram sends you to anyone.
